Growing Together – Sodfather & Manderley

What is The Sodfather?

The Sodfather Sod Supply is a leader in the Calgary market, delivering customer-first, community-driven service for residential and commercial landscaping projects of all sizes. Known for their dedication to quality, service, and community, The Sodfather has earned a reputation as a trusted supplier and installer of premium turf products.

The company’s roots trace back to the mid-2000s, when a high school football player took a summer job with a local sod installation company. That experience sparked a passion for the industry, and by 2008, Jason Dyler launched his first business, We Sod It Landscaping. As the business grew and evolved, it eventually rebranded as The Sodfather Sod Supply, maintaining a steadfast commitment to service and delivering “The Gold Standard in Green.”

For more than 15 years, Jason has partnered with Manderley Turf Products, using Manderley Less Water Sod to deliver lasting value for customers, while reducing water usage and maintenance needs. This partnership has helped to ensure The Sodfather customers receive sod that is cut fresh to order and delivered on time, providing the best possible start for their new lawns. The Sodfather’s dedication to reliability, quality, and customer care aligns with Manderley’s commitment to helping partners succeed. With Manderley’s consistent product quality, dependable supply chain, and service-first approach, this collaboration has built a strong foundation for growth.

Growing Beyond Calgary

In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, The Sodfather’s fast, contactless delivery grew in popularity. Sensing the time was right to expand his model elsewhere, The Sodfather Sod Supply opened shop in Edmonton. The expansion North proved to be a success, and with positive results in Alberta’s two largest markets, The Sodfather is now setting its sights on further East, in the Nation’s Capital. The Sodfather’s move into the Ottawa market, in partnership with Manderley, will bring the unique service and quality offering that Alberta customers have come to expect, to a new geography.

Ottawa’s market offers unique opportunities, including access to Manderley Less Water qualified drought tolerant sod grown on peat soil – a lighter, larger, and easier-to-handle product than typical mineral-grown sod. This makes installation faster and less demanding for homeowners and landscapers alike. Requiring up to 50% less water than conventional lawngrasses and resisting dormancy up to two times longer during drought periods, this sod ensures customers get the best possible long-term value, with significant savings in water and maintenance requirements to maintain a lawn that stays vibrant and healthy year after year. It’s these advantages – along with Ottawa’s thriving landscaping community – that make it the perfect place for The Sodfather’s expansion.

In Jay’s own words, the move to Ottawa is more than just strategic, its a natural next step: “Looking ahead to Ottawa, man, what a beautiful city! And great people too! My last trip out there was spent touring Manderley’s operation and the city; I had some really good experiences. One of them being experiencing the incredible, and I mean incredible sod rolls that Manderley offers out there. They are grown on Peat and I’m telling you, it’s the most amazing thing! Rolls in Alberta are 35-50 pounds, whereas Manderley’s sod rolls in Ottawa can weigh as little as 10 pounds! Now that sounds unbelievable, and you ask yourself, how is the quality? Let me tell you something! Seeing it firsthand was astonishing. The peat grown Less Water Sod was tremendous. It was fresh, deep green, and light as a feather”.

For more than 15 years, Manderley and The Sodfather have worked together to grow living greenspace for beautiful, healthy communities. We look forward to a new chapter, and are excited to experience what The Sodfather has in store for Ottawa.
